Preventive Dentistry in Portland, OR

Is it time (or past time) for your next dental cleaning? Let us help you achieve a clean, fresh smile and healthy gums.

At Roots Dental, we design custom preventive dentistry treatment plans based on your individual needs. By maintaining your health with preventive dentistry, you can often avoid more serious dental conditions in the future.

Comprehensive Dental Exams

Either Dr. Seth Huish and Dr. Ian Dickinson will thoroughly examine each of your teeth, your gums, and your bite to ensure that you have excellent oral health. If they notice anything during your dental exam that requires your attention, they will let you know and help you make a treatment decision that works best for you.

We recommend dental exams at least every six months. If something comes up between your regular dental visits, give us a call to so we can check it out.

Personalized Dental Cleanings

Every dental cleaning is not the same!

If you never miss a dental cleaning, you will have different needs than someone who suffers from gum disease. If it has been a while since you have had your teeth cleaned, we can help you get back on track.

Our hygienists are gentle and do a great job of cleaning your teeth in a way that promotes healthy gums. Our hygienists are also a great source for information on home care and helpful products that will help you achieve your oral health goals.

Digital Dental X-Rays

Dental x-rays are an essential part of your preventive dentistry treatment because they allow our dentists to see beneath the surface of your teeth and identify any instances of decay or other conditions that put your oral health at risk.

Digital dental x-rays are safe and emit about 80 percent less radiation than traditional film x-rays. Our dentists can adjust the digital images to get the best view and make early diagnoses when conditions are often easier and less expensive to treat.

Other Preventive Treatments

We offer additional preventive treatments based on your personal needs:

Fluoride Treatment

Fluoride can protect enamel from decay or from an acidic environment. We recommend fluoride for anyone who suffers from cavities, even though they brush and floss regularly, and for patients who have gum recession.

Sealants

Dental sealants create a protective barrier on your back teeth by filling in the deep grooves of your molars, which are often the most likely to develop decay. Sealants are a non-invasive procedure, and you will not need an anesthetic while they are placed. They are also a fraction of the cost of fillings and can last up to five years.

Nightguards

A clenching and grinding habit can destroy your teeth while you sleep. Cracked and chipped teeth are common with teeth grinding, but this habit can also cause your jaw to become inflamed and painful, as well.

A custom nightguard is a comfortable and non-invasive way to protect your smile if you grind your teeth.

Athletic Mouthguards

Don’t let sports ruin your smile! A custom mouthguard will not inhibit comfortable breathing but will protect your teeth from a rogue fly ball or aggressive hockey stick.
