Frequently Asked Questions About Teeth Extractions

Considering a tooth extraction or replacement in Portland, OR? The experienced team at Roots Dental Portland is here to guide you every step of the way. Below, we’ve answered common questions about the extraction process, recovery, and your options for restoring your smile.

How do I know if I need a tooth removed?

Tooth pain doesn’t always mean extraction is necessary. At Roots Dental Portland, we begin with a thorough exam to assess whether your tooth can be saved or if removal is the best way to protect your overall health. Extractions are typically recommended only when a tooth is too damaged to restore or poses a risk to surrounding teeth.

What are common reasons for extractions?

While preserving your natural teeth is always our goal, some conditions may require removal, such as:

  • Severe decay or infection

  • Cracks or fractures beyond repair

  • Failed root canal treatments

  • Problematic or impacted wisdom teeth

  • Space needed for orthodontic treatment

  • Teeth broken at or below the gumline

  • Preparation for dentures or implants

Routine exams and early treatment can help prevent many of these issues.

What’s the difference between simple and surgical extractions?

A simple extraction removes a fully visible tooth above the gumline and usually involves a quicker recovery. A surgical extraction, which is often needed for impacted or partially erupted teeth, may require stitches and a more involved healing process. Our Portland dental team will provide detailed instructions and keep your comfort a priority throughout the procedure.

Will my tooth extraction hurt?

We take every step to ensure your experience is comfortable. Local anesthesia is used to numb the area, and nitrous oxide (laughing gas) is available if you feel anxious. Aftercare guidance and medication, if needed, help ensure a smooth recovery.

What are my options for replacing a missing tooth?

At Roots Dental Portland, we offer several top-quality solutions to restore your smile after a tooth is removed:

  • Full or partial dentures

  • Implant-supported dentures

  • Dental implants

  • Dental bridges

Our team will help you choose the best option based on your oral health and lifestyle.

Should I have my wisdom teeth removed?

Wisdom teeth often cause problems if they’re impacted, crooked, or hard to clean. Even if they aren’t painful now, they may lead to crowding or decay. A full exam and dental x-rays will help us decide whether removal is the best course of action.

Does dental insurance cover tooth extractions?

Most dental insurance plans cover all or part of the cost of extractions. Roots Dental Portland accepts a wide range of insurance providers, and our team is happy to help you understand your benefits and make the most of your coverage.

Introducing your Portland dentists

Dr Jonathan Gold , DMD Roots Dental Broadway

Dr. Jonathan Gold , DMD

General Dentist

Dr. Gold graduated from OHSU dental school in 2010. Immediately following this, he and his wife moved to New Orleans, LA where he practiced for 9 years. There he treated mostly underserved families. This experience taught him to work with his patients to find personalized solutions to their needs. During those years, Dr. Gold also spent time volunteering at LSU dental school, working with first-year students starting to enter the field, furthering his passion for teaching and dentistry. Dr. Gold was born and raised in the Portland area and grew up with a love of skiing, wakeboarding, flying kites, and riding motorcycles. For college, he went to Whitman College and received a degree in Rhetoric/Film Studies and a Science degree from Portland State University. When not at work you can find Dr. Gold at the park with his son, Asher, cheering on his 49ers, or cooking. “I am very excited about the opportunity working at NE Dental Associates can provide me to expand my scope of practice and bring my brand of humor and lightheartedness to this office.”
Dr. Clark Brinton, DMD Roots Dental - Broadway

Dr. Clark Brinton, DMD

Dr. Brinton graduated from the OHSU School of Dentistry in 2013 as the class valedictorian. During his third and fourth years, he was selected as one of two students to train under Drs. Stanley Malamed and Ken Reed in IV sedation as a member of their mini-residency program.

He practiced general dentistry in New Mexico from 2013 to 2017, devoting much of his practice to IV sedation and dental surgery, including dental extractions, removal of impacted wisdom teeth, and dental implant surgery. Dr. Brinton credits his high level of experience and education in a short time to his commitment to continued professional education and training.

He holds education in such high regard that he is the CEO of Hero Dental Education, where he trains another dentist in hands-on dental implant surgery techniques, including dental implant surgery, restorative, complications, and All-on-4 implant retained dentures. His current course offerings are available at www.dentalimplanthero.com
